When most people think of vision correction, they think of LASIK eye surgery. While around 700,000 people get LASIK every year, it’s one of many laser vision correction options. Here’s everything you need to know about laser vision correction.
With over 35 years of combined experience, our dedicated team of skilled surgeons has one common goal: to give you the best vision possible without the dependence on contacts or glasses.
For clear vision, light needs to enter through your cornea and the eye’s lens. There, the light bends and then focuses on the retina. Photoreceptors in the retina turn the light into electrical signals. These electrical signals then travel through the optic nerve and to the brain.
Refractive errors happen when light focuses on the wrong part of the retina. This is what happens with nearsightedness and farsightedness. In these cases, the eyeball may be too elongated or short, or the lens is too thick or thin. It can also happen when light doesn’t converge to a single point on the retina, like in astigmatism. Laser vision correction fixes refractive errors. How this happens depends on the type of surgery you have. Laser vision correction surgery can change the way light focuses on your eye’s retina. This is achieved by modifying the cornea’s shape. Other surgeries permanently place special contact lenses between the iris and the lens.

At Kovach Eye Institute, we are proud to offer LASIK eye surgery using the iDESIGN Refractive Suite! The iDESIGN Refractive Suite provides a new level of technology that analyzes the patients entire eye inside and out. This allows our surgeons to perform a LASIK procedure that is truly personalized to each patient.
iDESIGN measures the eye using wavefront analysis as well as corneal topography map imaging. The wavefront analysis measures how light travels inside the eye and details imperfections in your vision. Then the corneal topography scans the outside of the eye to measure tiny variations in the eye’s curvature and elevation. These measurements combined deliver a one-of-a-kind LASIK procedure that is tailored to each eye!take lasik self-test

Kovach Eye Institute in Naperville is a phenomenal place if you need an Eye Care specialist. Dr. Mateen K. AliNiazee has given me the gift of sight. He is a true professional and thorough and really cares for his patients. I am so very thankful to him and ALL of his outstanding staff. I also visited the Elmhurst and South Barrington locations and great service at each.
I do not have enough nice things to say about Dr. Kovach and his team! Dr. Kovach was very flexible and accommodating by fitting me in to his schedule for my pre-op appointment and lasik surgery. His staff is extremely warm, friendly and professional and they guided me throughout the whole process. Dr. Kovach explained everything in detail and was able to confidently reassure me he could perform the surgery safely. The whole procedure lasted approximately 6 minutes and I was out of the office in 2 hours. It was completely pain free and I woke up with 20/20 eyesight! I would absolutely trust my eyesight to Dr. Kovach and would recommend to anyone looking for a fantastic comprehensive Ophthalmologist!
Whether it is LASIK or another method of refractive eye surgery, when the procedure is performed by one of Chicago's experienced ophthalmologists, the success rate for LASIK is extremely high. Chicago has a significant amount of well trained and experienced LASIK surgeons. To ensure a successful outcome we suggest talking with a LASIK surgeon to get an understanding of your personal vision and how LASIK will work to correct your vision. It is also a great idea to get your expectations in order prior to having this surgery. You should have a thorough understanding of the risks and benefits.
The Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery reported in 2016 that LASIK has a 96% patient satisfaction rate. Additionally, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has conducted several studies on the effectiveness of LASIK and the results have been very positive. For more information regarding LASIK risks and successes please feel free to visit the American Refractive Surgery Council website.

LASIK typically takes 5 minutes per eye and the laser itself takes about 20-50 seconds to correct your vision. Though, you should plan on being at your appointment for an hour and a half.
No, the LASIK procedure is painless. You will be given anesthetic eyedrops to numb the eye, and some are given a mild medication to decrease anxiety. There may be a slight pressure sensation around the eye, and after the procedure, you may feel a gritty sensation for the first few hours.
After your procedure, your vision will be improved, but will not be clear enough for you to drive safely. We ask that you arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure.
No, we ask that you discontinue contact lens wear and just wear glasses to allow the corneas to return to their natural shape. 1-2 weeks before the appointment is recommended for soft contact lens wearers, and 3-4 weeks is recommended for hard or rigid gas permeable contacts.
