Kovach Eye Institute, the premier provider of ophthalmic care in Chicagoland, is seeking an experienced Ophthalmic Technician and Scribe for our office locations in Elmhurst, Naperville, South Barrington and Lincolnwood.
The Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe supports the clinical and technical patient facing operations at the Kovach Eye facilities to ensure a positive experience and clinical outcome for our patients. This role requires strong clinical knowledge to prepare the patient for the exam by the Ophthalmologist, by performing preliminary exams, taking medical histories, and performing testing procedures. The Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe will also readily assist during minor laser and surgical procedures, in addition to scribing for the physicians at the Elmhurst, Lincolnwood, Naperville and South Barrington locations.
- Responsible for obtaining complete ophthalmic history and preliminary exams, sub-specialty tests fractions, VF test, Amslers, Muscle Testing, Pupil Examinations, Topography, OCT IOL
Masters/Ascans, Optos Fundus Camera, etc.) - Responsible for checking condition of patients’ eyes by observing pupils, muscle, visual acuity, and extraocular movements
- Responsible for performing basic and routine vision screening examinations and administering eye medications
- Responsible for preparing patients for ophthalmology examination by dilating pupils, changes in visual acuity, elevated extraocular pressure, and communicating results to Ophthalmologist
- Assists the Ophthalmologist during minor surgical and laser procedures while cleaning and maintaining ophthalmic instruments
- Preps treatment rooms by maintaining stock in in accordance to standard inventory and Ophthalmologist preferences
- Readily scribes for the Ophthalmologist
- Responsible for servicing patients by transmitting physician’s orders, use of drops, medications, prescription refill requests, and answering questions about surgery and specialty imaging
required/ordered. - Ensures clinical efficiency and operational flow by actively ensuring all EMR “to do’s” are expedited in a timely manner to support patient care
- Oversees clinical documentation and demographic data for accuracy in support of the Practice’s obligations under Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)
- Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records, completing diagnostic and procedure coding, and keeping patient information confidential
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures along with complying with legal regulations
- Assists with equipment maintenance by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and promptly reporting equipment issues
- Cultivates an environment that allows for a strong and productive employee experience

Travel required:
- Frequent travel between multiple Chicagoland locations is to be expected (Elmhurst, South Barrington, Naperville, and Lincolnwood)
Required Education and Experience:
- Associates degree or equivalent
- 1-3 years of ophthalmic clinical experience
- COA credentials
- Proficient in computers and relevant software applications and practice management technology
- Knowledge of customer service principles and practices
Preferred Experience:
- Customer Service/Concierge experience
- Cash pay healthcare practice experience
- Ophthalmic/Optometric background
- Spanish or Polish Speaking
Schedule:
- Monday – Friday & 2 Saturdays per month

- Responsible for accurately and timely billing out charges to insurance companies for services rendered
- Executes the completion of insurance verification and prior authorizations
- Responsible for Posting Payments
- Ensures clinical efficiency and operational flow by actively ensuring all EMR “to do’s” are expedited in a timely manner
- Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records, completing diagnostic and procedure coding, and keeping patient information confidential
- Demonstrates the ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and tact fostering a positive attitude
- Assists in monitoring accounts receivable
- Responsible for maintaining Patient Assistance Enrollment Program
- Responsible for servicing patients by answering questions about any bills both over the phone or in person
- Responsible for administering and following up on Patient Collections
Competencies:
- Strong medical billing knowledge in an ophthalmic setting
- Proficient Medicare, Medicaid & Commercial Insurance knowledge
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exceptional interpersonal and patient facing skills
- Efficient time management, planning, and organizing skills
- Ability to function independently in a high-paced and at times stressful environment while remaining professional and calm

Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1-3 years of medical billing experience
- Proficient knowledge CPT/ICD-10 codes and modifiers
Preferred Experience:
- Ophthalmic Billing Background
- CPT Credentials
