Comprehensive Medical Eye Care

Beyond treating specific eye conditions, our Naperville office provides comprehensive eye exams for patients of every age, screening for refractive errors and common eye diseases so small issues are caught before they become serious. We also monitor and manage diabetic eye care, since diabetes can affect vision in ways that go beyond diabetic retinopathy alone. New patients are always welcome, and we accept most major insurance plans.

Cataracts

A cataract develops when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, causing vision to look blurry, hazy, or faded in color, much like looking through a fogged window. It’s an extremely common age-related change, and cataract surgery remains one of the safest and most effective procedures in medicine. During surgery, our surgeons remove the clouded lens and replace it with a clear intraocular lens (IOL), restoring your vision.

Intraocular Lens (IOL) Options

Cataract surgery can do more than remove a cloudy lens, it’s also an opportunity to improve how you see at different distances. A variety of lens options are available to support your individual vision goals and lifestyle. Depending on your needs, your surgeon may recommend a standard lens that corrects vision primarily at one distance, or an advanced lens designed to improve vision at near, intermediate, and far distances, with less dependence on glasses. For patients seeking a more customized outcome, the Light Adjustable Lens allows your prescription to be fine-tuned after surgery, once your eye has healed. If you have an astigmatism, toric lens options are also available to correct it at the time of your cataract surgery. Your lifestyle, vision goals, and eye health all play a role in choosing the right lens for you, and you and your surgeon will work together to find the best fit.

LASIK & Modern Vision Correction

Our vision correction program covers every stage of refractive surgery, from your first consultation through post-procedure follow-up.

LASIK

LASIK uses a laser to reshape the cornea, correcting how light focuses on the retina. Most patients notice significantly improved vision within a day of treatment, often trading glasses or contacts for the freedom to go about their day without them, whether that’s for work, workouts, or travel. The procedure is performed under topical anesthesia, so you stay awake and comfortable throughout. Free consultations help determine whether traditional LASIK fits your prescription and lifestyle. SMILE LASIK

With the SMILE LASIK procedure, our surgeons remove a small piece of corneal tissue through an incision of less than 4mm. Unlike traditional LASIK, SMILE does not require a corneal flap, and Kovach Eye Institute was the first practice in Illinois to perform the procedure.

EVO ICL

The EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is an additive procedure. Rather than reshaping the cornea, a thin biocompatible lens is placed between the iris and your natural lens in a 20 to 30 minute surgery. Kovach Eye Institute was the first practice in Illinois to offer EVO ICL, and it remains a great LASIK alternative, including those with thinner corneas or higher prescriptions.

PRK

For patients with thinner corneas who still want laser vision correction, PRK reshapes the cornea using the same proven laser technology as LASIK, without creating a corneal flap. Recovery takes a bit longer than LASIK, but PRK remains a reliable option for correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Presbyopia

As the eye’s natural lens loses flexibility with age, reading and close-up tasks become harder. This natural change, called presbyopia, typically becomes noticeable in your 40s and affects nearly everyone over time. Our presbyopia treatments are personalized to your visual goals, from advanced lens options to refractive lens exchange, so you can reduce your dependence on reading glasses.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

If you’re over 40 and having a harder time focusing up close, or dealing with significant nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, refractive lens exchange replaces your eye’s natural lens with a custom intraocular lens. Because your natural lens is removed, RLE also eliminates the possibility of future cataracts in that eye, offering a permanent, forward-looking solution.

Retinal Conditions and Treatments

Our retina specialists diagnose and treat a range of conditions affecting the back of the eye, helping protect your long-term vision.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision and fine detail. We manage both dry and wet forms of the disease, including treatment with anti-VEGF injections and advanced imaging-guided care.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the retina over time, a condition called diabetic retinopathy. Regular dilated eye exams allow us to monitor and treat this condition early, using medical therapy, laser treatment, or intravitreal injections depending on severity.

Retinal Detachment

A retinal detachment occurs when the retina pulls away from the back of the eye and requires prompt surgical repair to prevent permanent vision loss. Our retina specialists diagnose and treat retinal tears and detachments using advanced surgical techniques.

Breakthrough Retina Treatments

For patients with dry age-related macular degeneration, Valeda® Light Therapy offers a non-invasive, FDA-authorized option that uses targeted light therapy to support retinal cell function and help slow disease progression. For the rarer Macular Telangiectasia Type 2 (MacTel), we also offer Encelto™, an FDA-approved cell-based therapy designed to help preserve vision by supporting retinal health from within the eye. Both treatments reflect our commitment to bringing the latest advances in retina care to our patients.

Glaucoma

Often called the silent thief of sight, glaucoma can progress without noticeable symptoms until it has already damaged the optic nerve. At Kovach Eye Institute, we take an interventional approach to glaucoma care, offering options that go well beyond daily eye drops to protect your vision proactively.

Non-Surgical & Laser Treatments

For many patients, prescription eye drops are the first line of treatment, working to lower eye pressure and protect the optic nerve. Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is another effective option, using a quick, in-office laser procedure to improve the eye’s natural drainage and reduce reliance on daily drops.

Advanced & Interventional Options

When more is needed, we offer minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) options like iStent and iTrack, which can often be performed alongside cataract surgery to improve fluid drainage with minimal disruption. For patients requiring more advanced care, sustained-release implants such as iDose TR and AlloFlo reduce or eliminate the need for daily drops, while the XEN Gel Stent and Ahmed Glaucoma Valve offer proven surgical solutions for complex or advanced cases. We also monitor and treat elevated eye pressure, known as ocular hypertension, which can be a precursor to glaucoma, to help lower your long-term risk.

Corneal Conditions

The cornea is the eye’s outer window, and damage or disease here can affect how well you see. Our team offers expert diagnosis and treatment to protect your vision and keep your eyes healthy.

Keratoconus

Keratoconus causes the cornea to thin and gradually bulge into a cone shape, distorting vision. Left untreated, advanced cases may require a corneal transplant, so early diagnosis and monitoring matter.

Corneal Cross-Linking

Our corneal cross-linking treatment strengthens the collagen fibers in the cornea to slow or stop the progression of keratoconus. We offer Epioxa, an FDA approved, epithelium-on treatment that preserves the surface of the cornea for a more comfortable experience and shorter recovery.

Corneal Transplants

For patients with advanced keratoconus or significant corneal damage, a corneal transplant may be the best option. Kovach Eye Institute offers both full-thickness and partial-thickness transplant techniques, performed on an outpatient basis, so each patient gets the right approach for their eye.

Dry Eye

Dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears, or the right quality of tears, to stay comfortably lubricated. Common symptoms include stinging, redness, and blurry vision that comes and goes. Our team can evaluate your symptoms and recommend a treatment plan to restore lasting comfort.

Eyelid & Facial Plastics (Oculoplastics)

Our oculoplastics team treats both the function and appearance of the eyelids and surrounding facial structures. Services include blepharoplasty to remove excess eyelid skin and improve vision blocked by heavy lids, ptosis repair for drooping eyelids, and BOTOX® to smooth fine lines around the eyes.
