Cataract Surgery

At Kovach Eye Institute, our entire team of physicians and support staff are dedicated to providing personalized and high-quality patient care, applying innovative and advanced technologies, and achieving surgical results that meet and exceed expectations.

It’s an exciting time to have cataract surgery!

There are better options than ever before to restore your sight. We will create a custom plan based on your visual goals. Cataracts cause your eye’s lenses to gradually become cloudy. As a result, less light enters the retina and vision becomes blurred or dimmed. This can make it difficult to do routine activities, like reading or driving.

What It's Like to See With a Healthy Eye Compared to One With a Cataract

Healthy Eye vs One With a Cataract

What causes cataracts?

The eye’s lens is composed of water and protein. As we get older, those natural proteins may clump together and make a small area of the eye’s lens cloudy. This is a cataract. Over time, proteins may keep binding together to cover a larger surface area of the lens, making it harder to see. Natural wear of the lens may be a culprit in forming cataracts. Smoking and diabetes can also make you more likely to develop cataracts.

Can cataracts be cured?

There are no treatments available that can reverse or prevent the progression of cataracts. Only cataract surgery can give you your clear vision back. At Kovach Eye Institute, we specialize in cataract surgery. We offer advanced, state of the art surgical technology and a selection of intraocular lenses (IOL) to meet your visual needs and lifestyle.

What happens if I don’t treat my cataracts?

If untreated, cataracts continue to worsen and reduce your vision. After long periods, untreated cataracts can lead to blindness. You should consider cataract surgery if you have cataracts impacting your vision, making it hard to complete day to day tasks like reading, driving, or chores. In general, the sooner cataracts are treated, the better the outcome.

What happens during cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is a simple procedure. During cataract surgery, the lens of the eye gets taken out and replaced with an artificial lens or IOL. After putting in the IOL, patients can finally see clearly again!

How is Kovach Eye Institute different in its approach to cataract surgery?

During the patient’s consultation with our surgeon, they will be presented with a set of surgical options. We urge patients to bring someone with them to aide in the decision-making process. We will provide written educational materials, as well as one-on-one counselling with the KEI surgeon and the Patient Coordinator. The patient will need to determine how they want the surgery performed and which type of lens they would like inserted to best meet their visual goals. Kovach Eye Institute offers a variety of traditional and innovative services to treat cataracts, including: Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery and a variety of Intraocular Lenses (IOLs).

Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (Femto Second Laser)

Safety, Accuracy and Predictability.  Less Incision, More Precision, Better Vision

The FemtoSecond Laser brings safety, accuracy, and predictability to bladeless cataract surgery. The FemtoSecond Laser first maps the surface of the eye to give the surgeon a 3D view. This view allows the surgeon to utilize laser precision for blade free incisions. The FemtoSecond Laser neutralizes astigmatism providing clear vision, breaks the cataract up into smaller, softer pieces for removal, and ensures the best conditions for optimal lens placement.

Optiwave Refractive Analysis (ORA) system: Ensuring Accurate Outcomes

Ora is a diagnostic scan which continuously monitors the eye during surgery to provide real-time corneal measurements to help guide accurate lens power selection, ensuring the most accurate surgical outcome. The ORA system takes precise measurements and maps the eye’s surface after we remove the lens. This allows for an individualized lens replacement. Patients with ORA-guided surgery have better vision outcomes compared to traditional cataract surgery.
